1. Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal Cordless – Editor’s Choice 2019

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

Established in 1991 as a British company by founder James Dyson, the worldwide brand of Dyson vacuum cleaners have, in a short 20-year period, earned their reputation for being some of the most remarkable cleaning machines ever invented. Dyson revolutionized what a vacuum cleaner should look like, how it should function, and how well it should operate for its user. Before Dyson, vacuum cleaners were based on simple carpet sweepers; however, after much trial and error perfecting prototypes, Dyson created and iterated a new type of vacuum cleaner that offers better suction and is much more durable than vacuum cleaners of the past. As is natural when there’s disruption in an industry, other vacuum cleaner brands soon followed suit; when looking at the vacuum cleaning market today, it’s plain to see just how many different brands have followed Dyson’s leadership and innovation.

Take, for example, our premiere editor’s choice model: The Dyson Cyclone Animal Vacuum Cleaner. This beauty looks like a ray gun, comes in a pleasing purple color, and can be operated with just one hand. It’s light weight enough to not tire your wrist, arms, or shoulders, and is perfect for those with back problems who have difficulty using heavier vacuums. But just because it’s so lightweight, Dyson hasn’t skimped on the motor quality. This is powered by the Dyson digital motor V10, touted as the “smallest, yet strongest motor Dyson has ever produced.” Forget steel; this is made with a ceramic shaft that spins up to 125,000 rpm (revolutions per minute). That not only gives it cyclonic power, it has the suction of a vacuum cleaner three times its size.

Three power modes make it customizable, when you need to turn up to the highest power. Low suction is better for hand held use, medium suction for all around use, and high suction for getting out stubborn dirt and pet hair. Whether you have low or high traffic areas, the Dyson Animal V10 will handle them all.

Since this vacuum is cordless, that also makes it one of the most portable you’ll ever own. Take it with you in any room of your house, office, out into the car, or traveling in an RV, and you won’t be tethered down. The large capacity battery needs just a three and a half hour charge minimum the first time you use it, and will give you up to 60 minutes of cleaning time when using a non motorized tool. Cordless plus power equals the perfect vacuum for small spaces, corporate spaces, and vehicles.

To use it with the regular torque drive vacuum cleaner head, simply attach it, set it on the floor, and squeeze the power button ‘trigger.’ In suction mode II, you get up to 20 minutes of fade free power. The stiff nylon bristles can capture dirt in even high pile carpeting, plus it’s great for medium pile and low pile as well. It even removes 25% more dirt than another Dyson model! You can clean hard floors, too. The head can be removed and tools attached to the stick in order to clean curtains, ceilings, under furniture, and other hard to reach areas. The motor is right above the handle, creating a great balance while you hold it.

Ready for hand held vacuum use? Take off the long center stick and the head to turn it right into a smaller version. It clicks right into place. Now you can do couch cushions, delicate rugs, the tops of bookcases, and over cabinets. Try it on your stairs, too. It will handle both carpeted and wooden stairs equally well. This kind of versatility is only found in an editor’s choice and top rated vacuum cleaner.

You get four Dyson made heavy duty and long lasting tools with your vacuum. It has a combination tool, crevice tool, miniature dusting brush, and a mini motorized tool that’s designed to grab pet hair and act as a little vacuum head. The motorized tool does use more battery power than the other tools, so be aware of that.

This Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner is not only cordless, but also bagless. It comes with its own easy clean dirt container. Just hold it over your trash can, press the lever, and the bottom pops open for the dirt to fall out. No need to touch it yourself. It is recommended that you clean it manually by hand about once a month, just to keep extra hairs and dirt out of the filter and increase the machine’s longevity. Wait 24 hours for the filter to dry.

All done with your cleaning? Then attach the Dyson Cyclone Animal Vacuum Cleaner to its wall mounted docking station. That keeps it up off the floor and stored out of sight. The docking station acts as both a charging area and a storage solution for extra tools.

Besides increasing battery length, the one thing we’d change about this model is to include a hardwood floor head. This vacuum is much better for low to medium pile carpeting.

2. Shark Rotator Lift-Away TruePet (NV752) – Runner-Up

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

While we review ten excellent vacuums for pet hair, Shark’s Rotator Lift-Away TruPet is our editor’s choice. Shark as a brand has a mission to provide products that are innovative, easy to use, and competitive in their pricing; this vacuum is a perfect example of Shark achieving that mission. If you’re looking for a high quality, reliable vacuum that picks up pet hair with ease, look no further (but continue reading this review for more information!). One thing to note: although we believe this vacuum is priced competitively for all of its pet cleaning features, it is one of the pricier vacuum cleaners on the market.

The Rotator Lift-Away True Pet is Shark’s original, full-sized powered lift-away vacuum cleaner. However, one of the main pros about this particular vacuum, and the reason you’re probably reading this article, is that it comes equipped with Shark’s TruePet motorized brush and pet upholstery tool. Whether you have a dog, cat, or any other type of furry animal, hair stands no chance when it comes into contact with the TruePet brush. While some upholstery tools rely on air pressure from the vacuum itself, Shark’s TruePet tool is motorized, meaning you’ll get a much stronger suction and deeper clean. This attachment can be used on a myriad of items and surfaces such as pillows, sofas, chairs, comforters, or cat trees and makes removing pet hair from places other than the ground a simple process. Additionally, this tool can be used in places where the vacuum’s powerhead is too large to reach, such as in a deep corner of your home or on a staircase. Keep in mind, as well, that this attachment does an excellent job at extracting dirt, dust, and allergens and cleaning up normal debris found through out your abode as it isn’t limited to pet hair.

Adding to what this Shark vacuum can do for you and your furry family member(s) is its Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology which includes a HEPA filter. This system is able to trap 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum, meaning the air quality in your home will be kept pure and you can entertain without worrying about guests who have allergies wanting to leave as soon as they walk in the door (provided you vacuum regularly, that is).

Although not pet hair specific, the Shark Rotator Lift-Away TruePet can be used in three different modes ensuring that you’ll have no difficulty cleaning the various spaces in your home. The first mode is a standard upright mode that is simple to maneuver and comes equipped with dynamic swivel steering technology. Then, by simply clicking a button, Shark’s Powered Lift-Away technology provides the ability to lift the canister from the rest of the vacuum and easily clean areas that are usually more difficult to clean for an upright, such as underneath chairs or tables. Shark makes note that although this mode is not only convenient but also provides exceptional power and keeps the brush-roll spinning. Finally, this vacuum cleaner has an above-floor mode that makes cleaning areas like staircases a breeze – cleaning your home shouldn’t be a crazy sweat-inducing workout (unless you want it to be, that is). As a quick note, some users have reported that the brush bristles fray more quickly than expected, but we see this as normal wear and tear.

Not only is our Editor’s Choice a specialist in ridding your home of pet hair, it’s also an all-terrain vehicle (okay, not really), capable of cleaning your home’s hard floor as well as carpet. This vacuum’s fingertip controls make it that switching between hard floor and carpet will become second nature and speed up the time it takes to vacuum the various rooms in your home. Adding to this, the Dust-Away hard floor attachment is able to quickly pick up pet hair, dust, and dirt from bare floors. Like other all-terrain vehicles, this Shark vacuum comes equipped with LED lights that will help you to navigate areas where there isn’t any light and ensure that you’re vacuuming up dirt and dust you may not have otherwise been able to see.

3. Eufy RoboVac 11 – Best Robotic Vacuum

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

You may have come to this pet hair-centric vacuum article not expecting to be reading a review about a robotic vacuum, yet here we are. Eufy, a brand that focuses on smart technology and innovative design to make life easier and home happier has taken their high quality RoboVac and outfitted it with pet hair and allergen cleaning capabilities, meaning your floor and carpet will be pet-evidence free, all while you sip on a piña colada – now that’s what I’m talking about.

Before we dive deeper into the concept of a robotic vacuum, let’s first check out why this particular robotic vacuum made it onto our list. Although there are numerous robotic vacuum’s on the market, it’s rare to find out that’s been outfitted to suck up pet hair and allergens like the RoboVac 11. This vacuum uses a triple filter technology – one of them being a HEPA-style filter – to deep clean in a way not found in many of its competitors. This particular filtration system traps microscopic allergy triggers, namely pet dander, but also dust mites and mold spores, meaning the air in your home will be cleaner and easier to breathe. This vacuum is able to clean pet hair off of floors and carpets as well as a standard pet-focused upright vacuum cleaner. While this robotic vacuum does an excellent job purging your floor and carpet of hair, there is one red flag: you’ll still need another type of vacuum to rid your upholstery of pet hair. Fear not though, as Bissell makes the very compact and reasonably-priced Pet Hair Eraser Handheld (reviewed below), which will compliment your RoboVac 11 perfectly.

When it comes to robotic vacuums, there’s a lot to love and get excited about. Plain and simple, a robotic vacuum cleans your house for you with the click of a button. In this day and age, it seems like all of our products are becoming ‘smart’, and the cleaning industry is no different. While traditional upright vacuums still have a place in the home-cleaning process, there’s something about the idea of watching a smart device clean your home for you that never gets old.

The RoboVac 11 comes equipped with a high-capacity li-ion battery that provides over an hour and a half of cleaning power. Adding to this, included with purchase is a remote control, a charging base, AC power adapter, cleaning tool, HEPA-style filter and 4 side brushes. Eufy has also outfitted this robotic vacuum with premium features such as and anti-scratch tempered glass cover, obstacle evading infared-sensors, and technology that allows it to avoid falling down staircases. Because of the RoboVac 11’s half-inch profile, it can easily get underneath tables, chairs, dressers, etc. to ensure a complete clean in places that a standard vacuum can’t reach. The Edge, Spot, and Max cleaning modes work together to provide a deep clean while Eufy’s research and development has resulted in a vacuum that is able to summit even the thickest rug and move speedily over uneven flooring.

If that this point, you’re wondering whether or not you can go so far as to take a nap while you’re house gets vacuumed for you, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Unlike the robotic vacuums of yesteryear, the RoboVac 11 is extremely quiet, even in it’s ‘Max’ cleaning mode. Put into perspective, this vacuum is quieter than most ceiling fans found in the average home.

  • Although a new brand, Eufy has an excellent reputation
  • Triple filter technology keeps your floor and carpet pet her and allergen free
  • Thoroughly cleans while you take care of more pressing matters
  • High-capacity battery offers 1.5 hours of continuous cleaning
  • Low profile allows it to access hard to reach locations
  • Three cleaning modes provide a deep clean

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • Handheld vacuum required to clean pet hair off upholstery
  • Some prefer the control of a traditional upright vacuum

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

If you thought robotic vacuums were a gimic, think again. The Eufy RoboVac 11 is not only a great vacuum, it’s an excellent pet-hair cleaning vacuum. The only downside is that you’ll need to supplement it with a handheld vacuum like Bissell’s Pet Hair Eraser Handheld.

4. Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light (HV322) – Most Versatile Vacuum

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

Shark must doing a lot right, as this is the second vacuum of theirs to make it onto our list. As we stated in the Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet review above, Shark strives to create products that are innovative and easy to use, all while being cost-competitive. Shark definitely hits the mark with the Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light, much like they do with our Editor’s Choice.

Like the Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet, this vacuum also comes equipped with Shark’s TruePet Motorized Brush and provides handheld deep cleaning for pet hair. What makes this particular attachment unique and puts both of Shark’s pet-specific vacuums on our top ten list is its motorized aspect. While some other vacuum attachments rely on air pressure from the vacuums themselves, the TruePet Brush’s motor allows it to achieve a stronger suction and deeper clean. For the pet owner, the technology behind this attachment is great as it picks up pet hair with ease and without much effort from the user. Whether your furry friends have left their hair on items or surfaces like pillows, sofas, chairs, comforters or cat trees, the TruePet tool has the power and suction to remove any evidence of your pet’s last nap, until the next one, that is. Furthermore, this attachment can be used to rid your home of dirt, dust, and allergens as it’s by no means limited to pet hair.

Depending on the size of your home, the number of pets you have, and/or how much your pet(s) shed, vacuuming your abode may be quite the chore. One of the things we love most about the Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light is, well, that it’s ultra-light – 8.6 pounds of light to be exact. Do keep in mind, although it isn’t a common complaint, some users over 6 feet tall may find this vacuum a tad short for them. Adding to this, the design of this best pet hair vacuum makes it so that it cannot stand without user assistance, meaning it has to be leaned against something if you step away. As first-hand pet owners, we know how tiring it can be in trying to rid your home of all pet hair before guests come over. Because of this particular vacuum’s lightweight design, you can easily vacuum every nook and cranny in your home and not feel like you just spent the last 45 minutes lifting weights at the gym. Additionally, switching from standard upright to a hand vac takes just a few seconds with the quick-release foot pedal so that you can easily reach the top of that cat tree (oh, you’re a dog person? Sorry about that…) or quickly vacuum that pesky cobweb off the ceiling.

Adding to the list of impressive features this Shark vacuum boasts is its Dust-Away hard floor attachment that can be used to pick up both large debris and fine dust (yes, pet hair included) from the bare floors around your home. What’s great about this particular attachment is that while it’s strong enough to remove large crumbs, it can also gently dust your bare floors without scratching or damaging them. While on the subject of bare floor, the Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light offers two speed settings, one for, you guessed it, bare floors and another for high-pile carpets ensuring that you get the best and deepest clean in every room. Similar to the Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet, this vacuum also comes equipped with LED lights both on the hand vacuum and nozzle that provide more visibly when cleaning the darker areas of your home, ensuring that you’re able to spot dirt and dust that isn’t as easily seen.

5. Bissell Symphony Pet (1543A) – Best Vacuum/Steam Mop All-in-One

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

As hard as it is to believe, Bissell has been in the vacuum business since 1876. For over 140 years, Bissell has been refining and perfecting the vacuum cleaner, and the Bissell Symphony Pet is proof of Bissell’s legendary history and focus on creating the best vacuum cleaner.

The only vacuum of its kind on our list, the Bissell Symphony Pet is a vacuum cleaner and a steam mop all-in-one, allowing the user to take removing pet hair from their home to a whole new level. We like to describe this Bissell vacuum as the swiss army knife of vacuum cleaners for pet hair, as it provides a wide array of features to ensure that you’re getting the deepest clean possible. Here’s the real kicker: this baby is even able to vacuum and steam at the same time, meaning you won’t have to cover the same ground twice in order to utilize both features.

Let’s dive in to the Symphony Pet’s steam mop feature and learn more about how it can help to combat the messes your innocent pets leave around your house. For starters, touch digital controls allow the user to easily switch between low-steam and high-steam modes depending on how deep of a clean is required in any given area. Example, let’s say your pet comes inside the house through the doggy door after using the restroom and has tracts a small amount of dirt into your home – the low-steam mode might be just enough to expel the dirt from your bare floor. However, if Fido decides to take a stroll into some mud and brings that back into your home, flip the switch and put the high-steam mode to work. Bissell’s thought of everything, even the fact that your pets sometime take making messes to the extreme. For standard everyday cleaning purposes, you can use washable mop pads; for those unpleasant pet accidents, or copious amounts of mud, Bissell offers swifferbissell steamboost disposal mop pads that provide an extremely deep clean and are meant to be thrown away after single use. Furthermore, steam is a natural germ killer, and the steam from the Symphony Pet eliminates 99.9% of germs and bacteria from your floors. Keep in mind, some users report the steam mop can leave slight streaking on your floor if not used with enough finesse. Also, be sure to keep your feet as far away from the steam feature as possible, or wear socks, as the sheer temperature can burn bare feet.

Bissell may have spent a lot of time refining the steam mop feature of this vacuum, but they definitely didn’t forget about the actual vacuum part of it. This vacuum has been made to seek and destroy pet hair and cat litter, and provides the user with great suction and power. Adding to this, because Bissell wanted to ensure that you were staying clean while cleaning your home, they’ve equipped this vacuum with a Drop-It tank-emptying system. To rid your vacuum of all the pet debris you vacuumed up, simply press a lever over a trash can and it’ll all fall right in, meaning you won’t have to deal with touching any of that mess your home is now free of.

[/su_note]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″]

Pros

  • Designed with over 140 years of vacuum experience
  • All-in-one cleaning action for pet hair and debris
  • Multiple cleaning modes for any situation
  • Steam mop is able to eliminate 99.9% of germs and bacteria
  • Great suction for pet hair and cat litter
  • Drop-It tank-emptying system

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • Somewhat difficult to use the steam mop for deep scrubbing
  • A few users report the steam mop leaves slight streaking

[/su_column][/su_row]

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

The Symphony Pet is an excellent choice for the user who vacuums and steam mops their home on a regular basis, or for someone who’s looking to start doing so. It’s all-in-one features provide the one-two punch needed to combat pet hair, cat litter, minor to extreme pet accidents, and the standard dust, dirt, and debris accumulated in daily life.

6. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld (33A1) – Best Handheld Vacuum

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

The second Bissell product in this post, the Pet Hair Eraser Handheld does precisely what it says–erases pet hair from the palm of your hand. As Bissell is a brand that’s been around for over 140 years, they definitely don’t need an introduction from us or an explanation as to why their product belongs on a best reviews list. This handheld vacuum is an expression of Bissell’s desire to create high quality products and continue to be a household name when it comes to household products.

While all of the other cleaners on our list are first and foremost great vacuums that have been equipped to handle pet hair and other pet related messes, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld’s first and main focus is the removal of pet hair from your home. Equipped with 4 amps of power and Bissell’s Cyclonic Cleaning System, this handheld vacuum is small but mighty, able to quickly vacuum up pet hair from furniture, upholstery, car seats, and carpet. This vacuum has been specifically designed to pull hair away from cloth and fabric, allowing you to finally see what’s underneath. What makes this particular vacuum unique is that it more or less ‘scrapes’ hair up instead of purely sucking, meaning the Eraser Handheld is able to remove hair that a normal vacuum cleaner may have had trouble with. Adding to this, it can effectively suck up other messes from your pet, such as cat litter and pet food, meaning you can enjoy your pets without worrying about the messes they tend to make.

The process of lugging a full-size vacuum around the house can sometimes be a daunting and exhausting experience. One of the biggest perks about having a handheld vacuum like the Pet Hair Eraser Handheld is the fact that it’s extremely light weight, coming in at 4.2 pounds, and means you can quickly clean up hair the second you notice it on your new throw pillow, versus having to wheel your full-size vacuum out just to spend 20 seconds on a spot treatment. In this day and age, our time is precious as it never feels like we have enough hours in the day. Being able to pull out your Pet Hair Eraser Handheld for a quick clean and then put all 4.2 pounds of it away is a simple and seamless process. Let’s face it, no one should worry about getting up off the couch only to find that the whole backside of their shirt is covered in pet hair, but who wants to run to the closet to grab their vacuum every time their pet decides to move from one pillow to the next?

Like some of the other vacuums on this list, the Pet Hair Eraser Handheld is equipped with a multi-layer filtration system, which is pretty awesome considering it’s lower price-point and small stature. What makes these filtration systems so great is that they work to keep the air in your home cleaner by reducing the amount of allergens floating around – meaning friends or family with allergies won’t dread coming to your home.

One thing we do want to bring light to regarding this vacuum cleaner is that while it does an excellent job at picking up pet hair and does a pretty good job at vacuuming up other pet-related messes, it may not be an all-encompassing handheld vacuum replacement. As this vacuum has exhaust blowers situated on its sides that push air down, lighter dirt and dust can sometimes be pushed away from the unit, making it harder to actually vacuum up. However, when it comes to pet hair, this handheld cleaner does it like the best of them.

The Bottom Line

While you’ll still need a standard full-size vacuum or a robotic vacuum for the majority of your home, the Pet Hair Eraser Handheld does an incredible job at removing pet hair from furniture and upholstery. If you’re looking for a convenient cleaner to add to your vacuum arsenal, this handheld may be for you.

7. Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet (UH70210) – With Cord Rewind Technology

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

Like Bissell, the Hoover brand has a long and rich history, having been founded in 1908 and growing to become one of the most well-known brands in the world. Hoover has spent over 100 years designing and manufacturing cleaning products and knows what it takes to create good products that satisfy their consumers.

In looking at the other vacuum’s on our list, the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet reminds us the most of our Editor’s Choice, as it has a similar size, weight, functionality, and is also a standard upright vacuum cleaner. Of course, one of the main reasons it made this list, and arguably its most important features for readers of this review are its Air Powered Pet Hand Tool and Pet Upholstery Tool. While some of the vacuum cleaners on this list have one pet tool that is only for upholstery/furniture or is to be used on both upholstery/furniture and on the floor, Hoover has equipped the T-Series WindTunnel Pet with two different tools, each one made specifically for either floors or upholstery and furniture. For floors, this vacuum cleaner has an Air Powered Pet Hand Tool that easily sucks up pet hair off of the floor, meaning no more worrying about walking around your house with bare feet. For upholstery and furniture, this vacuum has a Pet Upholstery Tool that quickly removes pesky hair from pillows, sofas, comforters, chairs, etc., meaning you won’t have to constantly double-take before sitting down (assuming you regularly vacuum your home).

One of the coolest (albeit non-pet hair related) features this vacuum’s been equipped with is its cord rewind technology. Picture this: you’ve just spent the last 20 minutes vacuuming your family room and kitchen and couldn’t be more ecstatic to be done. You turn around and realize that your job’s not over as there’s 25 feet of power cord to wind back up and in an instant the wind is taken out of your sails. With Hoover’s Cord Rewind Technology, you no longer have to worry about winding up your vacuum’s power cord, as you can now tap on a pedal to activate the 25-foot cord rewind and watch as the cord is retracted into the vacuum cleaner, without really any effort on your end.

Adding to the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet’s impressive list of features is its folding handle, which makes storing this fully-upright vacuum in small spaces fairly easy, as it decreases the height of the vacuum substantially. Furthermore, Hoover has outfitted this vacuum cleaner with five different carpet height positions, meaning no matter how thin or thick your carpet is, the T-Series WindTunnel Pet has an ideal setting. Finally, a 12-inch extension wand and crevice tool provide you a couple more weapons in your dirt and dust-fighting arsenal, ensuring that no hard to reach area or tight spot gets missed.

While Hoover has made an impressive vacuum, we do have a few qualms. The first has to do with the 12-inch extension wand that we mentioned in the previous paragraph. While it’s a great tool, it may not be long enough to reach up-high areas where cobwebs or dust resides. If you have higher ceilings or are on the shorter side, a step stool may be needed to reach those high-up areas. One other qualm we have is that some find this vacuum a bit difficult to empty. While users across the board don’t see this as an issue, we wanted to at least mention it.

8. Dyson V8 Animal Cord-Free – Best Dyson V10 Alternate

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

When it comes to innovation and revolutionary technology, no other vacuum brand does it better than Dyson. Dyson’s first mass market vacuum came out in 1993 and was welcomed with open arms, becoming the vacuum of 47% of households in the UK. Since then, Dyson hasn’t skipped a beat, and has continually pushed the boundaries on what vacuums can and should do. Do keep in mind, though, that Dyson vacuums are usually more expensive than their competitors.

As a whole, the Dyson V8 Animal Cord Free is a truly amazing piece of technology (feel free to check out their full line of animal-focused cleaners!). For the purposes of this article, we’ll first focus on the mini motorized pet hair tool that’s included with purchase. Designed with stiff, nylon bristles, Dyson’s mini motorize attachment easily removes pet hair from furniture, upholstery, and car seats. Like Shark’s TruePet Motorized Brush, Dyson’s pet hair tool is also motorized, meaning it doesn’t have to rely on air pressure from the vacuum itself. The added motor results in a deeper clean and stronger suction resulting in pet hair free surfaces without multiple passes and a gnarly arm workout. While some vacuum attachments feel somewhat cheap and flimsy, this tool feels durable and well-built. Adding to this, although we put an emphasis on this tool’s ability to vacuum pet hair, it also does an excellent job at sucking up ground-in dirt – you know the type, the dirt that seems to deep into your carpet that it’s now a permanent resident.

After reading the previous paragraph regarding Dyson’s mini motorized tool, you might be wondering how in the world you’re supposed to clean upholstery with a full-size upright vacuum. Dyson’s designed the wand of this vacuum to detach in just a couple of seconds, meaning this vacuum cleaner can be an upright or a handheld in a matter of seconds, depending on the need. Whether it be furniture, upholstery, car seats, or any other surface/area where an upright wand wouldn’t be feasible, the V8 Animal Cord Free’s handheld mode is your best friend. Not to mention, you’ll be closer to the pet hair and dirt you’re vacuuming up, meaning you’ll be better able to see all of the areas that need vacuuming.

While some upright vacuums are quite heavy and require the use of an attachment or tool to vacuum the staircase or ceiling, the Dyson V8 Animal Cord Free’s center of gravity (located near the hand grip) and five pound weight means it’s standard upright mode can be used to clean the ground, staircase, and ceiling without having to use an attachment or tool to do so. Rather than focus on including everything including the kitchen sink, Dyson believes that less is more – we tend to agree with them. A couple reservations we have about the design of this vacuum: the first is that to keep it’s design and weight in line, Dyson opted for a smaller than average canister, meaning you may find yourself emptying it more often. Second, the vacuum cannot stand up without assistant from the user, meaning you’ll have to lean it against something if you need to step away.

You may have noticed that the name of this vacuum includes the words ‘cord-free’. To make life easier on you and your home-cleaning process, this vacuum has no power cord and can accomplish it’s deep-cleaning ability without ever having to be plugged in. Instead, Dyson provides a convenient wall charger that your vacuum and be clipped in to when it’s not in use. Speaking from first hand experience, power cords can easily put a rather large damper on your cleaning momentum; moving from room to room means unplugging and re-plugging the power cord multiple times before you’re finished. Also, if running out of battery power or not having good enough suction is your fear, it shouldn’t be. A full charge provides 20 minutes of continuous suction and provides exception power and suction.

9. Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog – Best Canister Vacuum

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

You may not be too familiar with Miele, but if you’re in the market for an excellent vacuum cleaner, you should definitely familiarize yourself with the quality of products they produce. Like Bissell and Hoover, Miele have been around for well over 100 years and create high-end household products and appliances. Before we jump into our review for the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog, be aware that this is a pricier vacuum. That being said, you’re getting an extremely high quality and long-lasting product when you by a Miele vacuum; if you can afford it, strongly consider the Complete C3 Cat & Dog for your home-vacuuming purposes.

When it comes to the main focus of this particular vacuum, Miele wanted no confusion that it’s specifically designed to combat the unfortunate messes that cats and dogs tend to make on a regular basis. For starters, this vacuum comes with Miele’s STB 101 Mini Turbobrush, which is an attachment that easily removes pet hair from upholstery, furniture and carpet. Miele has made it a point to create a tool that is powerful enough to suck up hair located deep in carpets as well as from delicate upholstery. Additionally, the STB 101 Mini Turbobrush is great for vacuuming up pet hair, dirt and crumbs from staircases or tight corners around your home.

Another pet-related feature that the Complete C3 Cat & Dog is equipped with is its Active AirClean Filter. We think we speak for everyone when we say that however cute, our pets sometime provide our homes with aromas that are less than pleasant. Miele understands the needs of pet owners and have designed this particular vacuum with a filter that combines its AirClean technology with an active charcoal cassette, meaning odors are absorbed and ultimately neutralized. Adding to this, Miele’s AirClean Sealed System traps over 99.9% of all lung damaging particles. The AirClean filter and sealed system are especially great if you, your family or friends struggle with allergies or asthma, as it helps to provide cleaner, breathable air.

While the Complete C3 Cat & Dog made this list because of its pet hair cleaning capabilities, it truly is an all-around fantastic vacuum cleaner. For starters, it comes equipped with Miele’s Electro Plus Electrobrush, an attachment with five different height adjustments as well as an independent motor, meaning it doesn’t rely on air pressure from the vacuum to do its job, providing a much stronger suction and deeper clean. The Electrobrush can be used to vacuum the whole house and does exceptionally well with medium to deep carpeting and smooth surfaces. Also for smooth surfaces (albeit more delicate ones) is the Parquet Twister, a narrower and gentler tool than the Electrobrush, with the ability to rotate 180 degrees to get into areas the Electrobrush is too large for. Rounding out the Cat & Dog’s accessories are a dusting brush, upholstery tool and crevice nozzle.

As you might have noticed in the title of this review, this is a canister vacuum, meaning its cylindrical in shape and has to be pulled behind your or carried around instead of pushed in front of you like a standard upright vacuum. One of the things we like about canister vacuums is that they can easily reach under couches or other furniture to vacuum up pet hair that standard uprights just aren’t able to. Canister vacuums tout maneuverability, which is a huge plus when it comes to vacuuming up pet hair, as it tends to end up literally everywhere. While it has its pros, not everyone is a fan of the canister vacuum. A common complaint regarding this style is that you have to lug it around with you everywhere you go (picture a carry-on suitcase). Also, canister vacuums tend to be on the heaver side; this vacuum, in particular, is the heaviest vacuum cleaner on our list, weighing in at 19.4 pounds.

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″]

Pros

  • Miele is a leader in producing high-end vacuums
  • Pet hair cleaning STB 101 Mini Turbobrush
  • Active AirClean Filter
  • AirClean Sealed System
  • Standard attachment has an independent motor
  • Can reach areas standard uprights cannot

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • Heaviest vacuum on our list
  • Uprights tend to be easier to navigate around the house
  • Higher price-point

[/su_column][/su_row]

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

There’s no doubt that this vacuum is pricier. However, if you’re a fan of canister vacuums and are serious about ridding your home of pet hair, pet odors and lung damaging particles, Miele’s Complete C3 Cat & Dog provides an exceptional clean in a stylish form factor.

10. Black+Decker Airswivel Pet (BDASP103) – Best on a Budget

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Rundown

Like many of the other brands in this post, Black+Decker was founded over 100 years ago with the mission of setting the standard for innovation and design for home and commercial products. Although they’re not necessarily known for their vacuum cleaners, Black+Decker pursues the same level of quality with all of their products.

While the Black+Decker Airswivel Pet is a good all-around vacuum, once of its main selling points, and the main reason it made this list, is its pet tool accessory. While some of the other pet tools we’ve discussed have added frills, Black+Decker opted for a minimal yet effective pet attachment for this vacuum cleaner. Whether your pet’s hair is on upholstery, furniture, rugs, pet beds, or comforters, this tool has the suction required to speedily remove it, until the next time your pet wanders around, that is. Adding to this, the Airswivel Pet includes HEPA filters that help to remove dust and allergens from your home, increasing the air quality and providing a safer environment for those with asthma or allergies. As this vacuum has been dubbed our ‘Best Budget Vacuum for Pet Hair’, we’re impressed that it provides the amount of pet cleaning features it does at a reasonable price-point.

If you have a cat, you know how easily hair can accumulate underneath beds or couches as they tend to be a cat’s go to hangout spot. Problem is, our furry friends don’t realize how hard it is for us to vacuum underneath those tight spaces. Black+Decker understands the struggle and has equipped this vacuum with a 2-in-1 crevice tool and small brush, perfect for removing pet hair, dirt and dust from underneath furniture or in general hard to reach areas of your home.

When its time to empty the vacuum of the pet hair, dirt and dust that it’s sucked up through out your home, the dust cup release button makes the process clean and easy. By simply pressing the button, the dust cup unlatches at the bottom and all of the junk that was once on your carpet, floor and upholstery falls gracefully into the trash can – good riddance.

Although not pet hair specific, we’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about Black+Decker’s Airswivel technology – it’s in the name of the vacuum, after all. Black+Decker explains that while traditional upright vacuums need two motors to provide swivel functionality, their patented technology only requires one, meaning the user is able to maneuver the vacuum much more effectively. Adding to this, the Black+Decker Airswivel Pet is a full-size upright vacuum, but only weights 8.8 pounds, meaning carrying it up and down stairs isn’t an accident waiting to happen.

While there are a lot of great things to say about this vacuum cleaner, we do have a couple qualms, the first of which being that the swivel feature, although innovative, makes it somewhat difficult to push the vacuum across thicker carpeting. While this isn’t a deal-breaker if you do have carpeting with thicker ply, it is something to be aware of before purchase. Second, this cleaner is somewhat loud and may not be preferred over some of the quieter models on our list.

  • Patented Airswivel technology

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • Swivel functionality and thicker carpet don’t mix all that well
  • Louder than the other vacuums on our list

[/su_column][/su_row]

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

While cheaper than some of the other vacuums in this article, the Black+Decker Airswivel Pet offers a well-made pet hair cleaning tool and HEPA filters to combat the pet related messes around your home. Add in it’s patented Airswivel technology and you’ve got an excellent budget friendly cleaner.

Best Vacuum for Pet Hair Buyer’s Guide

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

Finding the perfect vacuum to fit your and your pet’s needs is no easy feat. With all of the different vacuum manufacturers vying to create the top cleaner, you as the consumer are put in a great position with a myriad of different options. That being said, the number of vacuums on the market is a double-edged sword, as it makes deciding on one vacuum in particular much more difficult. This buyer’s guide is intended to shed some light on some of the most important pet and pet hair related features your new vacuum should have, as well as provide insight into the different types of vacuums available, and what they have to offer (Of course, if vacuuming isn’t enough, you can always remodel your home to better suit your pets).

Pet Specific Features

While most vacuums nowadays are equipped with at least one pet hair-fighting feature, pet specific vacuums are equipped with a slew of features that aid the user in ridding his or her home of pet hair and other pet related messes. When it comes to cleaning up your pet’s messes, although a standard vacuum might do a decent job, we highly recommend you purchase a pet specific vacuum cleaner as their features are second to none when it comes to pet related messes.

Pet Hair Tool

A pet hair tool is your bread and butter for ridding your home of pet hair. From pillows, sofas, chairs, comforters, cat trees and other types of upholstery, pet hair attachments are made to easily suck up pet hair, leaving your items looking brand new. While there are other types of cleaning attachments, pet hair tools are usually equipped features like with rubber wipers, specialized brushes, and even individual motors that aid in the complete removal of pet hair. Additionally, pet hair tools are useful in areas where the vacuum’s powerhead won’t reach, like on staircases or underneath a couch. Finally, pet hair tools aren’t only for pet hair, and can also be used to vacuum up dirt, dust and allergens.

HEPA Filters

When it comes to pet hair specific vacuums, one important feature is to be on the look out for is HEPA filters. While your pets are like family and mean the world to you, they might mean allergies, asthma, and itchy eyes to your family and friends. Everyone knows someone who can’t be in a house where pets rule the roost for more than 10 minutes before launching in to a full-blown sneeze attack. HEPA filters are able to trap things like pet-related allergens, dust and pollen, meaning you, your family and guests can breathe easy (quite literally), as HEPA filters mean better air quality in your home.

System Sealing Technology

Usually equipped alongside HEPA filters, system sealing technology is another fantastic pet specific feature that should strongly be considered when looking for the ideal vacuum. System sealing technologies work together with HEPA filters to ensure that no dust or allergens leave the vacuum cleaner once sucked up. There’s really no point in having a vacuum cleaner that has the ability to remove dust and allergens from your home, but isn’t equipped to keep those nasty particles trapped for good. With system sealing technology, your air will be cleaner and remain that way, so long as you regularly vacuum your home.

Odor Absorption

Although not a common feature, some pet hair vacuum cleaners, like the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog and the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet, have the ability to absorb those unwanted pet odors from your upholstery. To accomplish this goal, the Compete C3 uses a charcoal cassette, while the WindTunnel Pet uses a carbon filter. Although it’s not a common feature and shouldn’t be a deal-breaker as it would drastically limit your options, having a pet odor absorption feature definitely deserves some serious thought when attempting to make a decision.

Upholstery Brush

An upholstery brush doesn’t need much of an introduction. When it comes to pet hair, however, an upholstery brush is of utmost importance. While a pet hair tool will do most of the heavy lifting, this type of brush will help to break up some of the deeply embedded pet hair that has overstayed its welcome. When looking to purchase a pet vacuum for your home, make it a point to see if its equipped with an upholstery brush.

Vacuum Type

Finding the right type of vacuum to fit your and your home’s needs is a big decision. The good news is, there are a lot of different options to ensure that you find the perfect fit; the bad news, however, is that you may find yourself liking multiple types and have difficulty choosing just one. In some cases, however, one type of vacuum won’t be enough, and you will indeed need to have a couple different options on-hand for different situations. Furthermore, some vacuums actually have the ability to be used in multiple formats, meaning you’ll get the best of both worlds. Whatever your preference, there’s a vacuum, or a set of vacuums, available to rid your home of pet messes.

Upright

In the US, upright vacuums are by far and large the most popular choice for Americans. Most uprights are equipped with a brush-roll that’s powered by a motor separate from the suction provided by the larger motor. Uprights are either equipped with manual buttons that can be clicked on or off to start or stop the brush-roll for carpet (where its needed) and hard floors (where its not), while some uprights are intuitive enough to know when to start and stop the brush-roll automatically. Uprights are designed to be pushed while the user is standing upright, and most of the time come with a myriad of attachments for additional cleaning purposes.

Canister

While upright vacuums dominate the US market, canister types dominate the UK. Canister vacuums are just that – a cylindrical shaped container with wheels on the bottom and a hose extending off it. Canister vacuums typically come standard with a long hose and are great for hard floors, stairs, and getting underneath furniture. While popular, canister vacuums are sometimes seen in a negative light by US consumers, as they’re not as easy to maneuver around the house as an upright is; this is due to canister vacuums having to be pulled behind you rather than pushed in front of you, meaning you’re in essence toting a small suitcase around the house. Adding to this, canister vacuums are usually more expensive than uprights.

Handheld

When it comes to convenience, nothing beats a handheld vacuum cleaner. Handheld vacuum cleaners are small enough to pull out whenever you see some pesky pet hair or dirt lying around, meaning you don’t need to get out your full-size vacuum cleaner every time you want to do a quick spot treatment. Although handheld vacuums are lightweight and easy to use, they’re not enough on their own to be your whole home’s cleaner. Handheld vacuums are great when paired with another type of vacuum, such as a robotic or upright; picture them as a sidekick to the vacuum you use to clean the carpets and floors of your home.

Robotic

While somewhat newer to the vacuuming world, robotic vacuums have proven their worth and are here to stay. Robotic vacuums are pretty self explanatory, as they are robotic, meaning they don’t require any work from the user to get the job done. Although some may think robotic vacuums are just a novelty and can’t get the same clean as an upright or canister vacuum, the suction on a high quality robotic vacuum really can give traditional vacuums a run for their money. Additionally, a top-rated robotic vacuum excels at getting into all of the nooks and crannies around your abode. Do keep in mind, however, that you will need to pair a robotic vacuum with something like a handheld to clean upholstery, staircases, and other difficult to reach locations.

2-in-1

When it comes to multi-tasking, no other vacuum type does it better than a 2-in-1. As the name suggests, 2-in-1 cleaners offer the user two different vacuum types with one single purchase. One example of this is the Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light (HV322) listed in our Best Vacuum for Pet Hair post above, which functions as a standard upright vacuum, as well as a handheld. The convenience of 2-in-1 vacuums is undeniable, as you can easily swap back and forth between one vacuum type for carpeting and floors, and another for upholstery. While upright/handheld 2-in-1s are most common, other vacuums, like the Bissell Symphony Pet (1543A), offer a standard upright vacuum that’s also a steam mop at a moment’s notice.
