1. WoodBridge T-0001 – Editor’s Choice 2019

WoodBridge caught us off guard with their line of modern, high quality toilets. How can the editor’s choice toilet not be a Toto, American Standard, or Kohler? You may know these brands, but here’s why this WoodBridge is the best toilet.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

[su_box title=”About WoodBridge” style=”default” box_color=”#f0e6ff” title_color=”#000000″ radius=”3″]

Founded in 2005, WoodBridge manufactures great products for the bathroom and kitchen. Their mission is to provide customers with high value products and great customer service.

[/su_box]

The Woodbrige T-0001 has a sleek, modern shape that fits in any home. It is HONESTLY one of the best looking toilets we have ever seen! This model’s design smoothes the crevices and grooves found on a standard toilet (by removing the skirted trapway).  Because there are fewer nooks for grime to hide, this also makes cleaning a breeze. It’s not just pretty on the outside, it’s internal build makes it durable and long-lasting.

Adults will be able to easily sit on the T-0001. At 18 inches from the floor to the top of the seat standing up is natural too. It has a 21st century dual flush system. Two buttons at the top of the toilet bowl control the amount of water used during flushing. For smaller or more liquid waste you can save water. The flush has a siphon design that is fully glazed to prevent clogs or leaks. Finally, this toilet comes standard with a soft closing seat. So no loud clanks waking up your family if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. This toilet’s flush is also quiet. It also has a stainless steel hinge for easy cleaning and removal.

[su_box title=”More on the dual flush system” style=”default” box_color=”#f0e6ff” title_color=”#000000″ radius=”3″]

The first button delivers a full gallon per flush. The second button, for larger deposits, flushes with 60% more water, a full 1.6 gallons per flush. Using the first setting means you won’t be wasting water on small deposits. According to WoodBridge, high-efficiency flushing saves 16,500 gallons of water every year.

[/su_box]

Installation Process

Included in the T-0001’s box is everything you need to get it up and running – err, flushing. This includes the toilet, soft closing seat, wax rings, floor bolts, and installation guide. WoodBridge includes a hand wrench tool for tightening bolts in hard to reach places.

WoodBridge backs the T-0001 with a 5-year limited warranty on porcelain parts (fading/staining). Along with this comes a 1-year limited warranty for the soft closing seat and flushing mechanism.

Pros

  • Sleek, modern design that fits with almost any style of home
  • Skirted trapway adds further to the design while also making cleaning easier
  • A dual-flush system means you’ll conserve water and save money
  • Extremely durable and long-lasting unit
  • Purchase includes everything needed to install the toilet

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • While touted as easy, some believe the installation process is a bit trickier than expected

The Bottom Line

While WoodBridge doesn’t have the star power of some of the other toilet brands in this review, the design and quality of the T-0001 make it one of the best units the market has to offer, and all at a relatively reasonable price-point for most consumers.

2. Toto Eco Ultramax – Eco-Friendly

The TOTO Eco Ultramax is an ADA certified elongated toilet. Its one-piece design makes it easy to install. It also gives it a more finished, seamless look, especially at the base of the tank. Having an elongated shape, it juts out from the wall quite a bit more than standard toilets. It’s ideal for smaller bathrooms that need a toilet that isn’t as wide as other models. The sleek, modern design fits in well with contemporary fixtures.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

Streamlined Clean

You’ll appreciate TOTO Eco Ultramax when you clean the bathroom, since its streamlined shape is easy to wipe. There is an elongated space between the bottom of the tank and the top of the lid which is easy to access for clean up. It also has fewer hidden nooks and crannies where bacteria can develop. Overall, having a one-piece toilet is more sanitary than a two-piece for these reasons.

ADA Approved Seat Height

This TOTO Eco Ultramax Toilet meets ADA standards. The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, makes rules to ensure bathrooms are usable by all people. This toilet’s dimensions, including height and bowl height, comply with the ADA. That makes it ideal for commercial or residential use. This model is quite tall, so it’s great for taller users.

Efficient Flush

This toilet is “eco-friendly” because it uses less water to flush. This eco version of the Ultramax uses only a 1.28 GPF (gallons per flush) in its gravity flush. Older toilets use around 3 or 5 GPF double or more than this TOTO. This model saves water and lowers your utility bill and usage. The flush is quiet, and perfect for bathrooms that are next to bedrooms and nurseries. You won’t wake up anyone.

SanaGloss

While we call it the ‘porcelain throne’, this toilet is made from something better. TOTO manufactures it from vitreous china in a white cotton color. They seel it with SanaGloss glaze, an ionized barrier on the china. This coating prevents debris, mold, and bacteria from sticking to surfaces. It’s more sanitary and because it needs fewer chemicals for cleaning, it’s safer for the environment. The SanaGloss glaze is more delicate, though, so gentler toilet bowl cleaners are needed to avoid scrubbing off the glaze.

Soft Closing Lid, Soft Seat

The TOTO Eco Ultramax has a soft closing lid. No more accidental lid banging or slamming in the middle of the night when you are stumbling around. It gently closes as soon as you let go. The seat has an ergonomic design with molded bumpers. It is made of high gloss polypropylene, which won’t degrade from bleach or other harsh bathroom cleaning chemicals.

Other Features

Inside the bowl is a wider, 2 1/8” fully glazed trapway. This will prevent internal clogging after flushing large messes. The flush valve lever is much wider at 3” than standard 2” flush valves. Bigger valves push water into the bowl faster resulting in a powerful flush with less liquid. The fittings and left hand side flush lever are made of polished chrome which resists fingerprints.

Installation

The TOTO Eco Ultramax is a heavy toilet. At 117 lbs you will need at least one other person to help you move it into place. If you install this toilet yourself know that it comes with mounting bolts. You may need to buy multiple tools, however, to install it. Be sure to carefully measure your space before installing, to make sure it will fit.

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″]

Pros

  • One piece toilet is easier to install and clean than two piece
  • SanaGloss ion barrier protects china bowl and makes cleaning easier
  • Soft closing lid to prevent banging
  • Quieter flus
  • Large polished chrome flush lever
  • Compliant with ADA height and size requirements
  • Eco friendly and low gallon per flush

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • Have to buy a lot of tools to install it
  • SanaGloss only covers the bottom of the bowl and might miss some material
  • Only use gentle cleansers with the SanaGloss
  • Bowl is slightly smaller than a regular toilet

[/su_column][/su_row]

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

By choosing the TOTO Eco Ultramax Elongated One Piece Toilet, you’re getting a quality toilet that has some great things to recommend it, including the one piece design, eco friendly low gallon per flush amount, soft closing lid, and chrome lever. The SanaGloss is a nice bonus, but not a necessary feature if you don’t require it. This model is recommended for residential or commercial bathrooms that need to be ADA compliant.

[/su_note]

3. Toto Ultramax II – Best Brand Overall

As runner up for editor’s choice, the TOTO Ultramax is one of our favorite one-piece toilets reviewed. The one-piece design makes this toilet sleeker and cleaner than the brand’s two-piece options. One-piece units are easier to clean because they have fewer places for bacteria and grime to hide.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

On this particular unit, the chrome tip lever is a nice addition on the left side of the tank. The clean lines make this toilet a great addition to almost all bathroom styles. It comes in four colors: cotton white, colonial white, bone, sedona beige. We also love that the rim has no holes, which provides a more seamless appearance. It also makes it easier to clean, but more on cleaning benefits of the Ultramax later.

ADA Compliant Height and Size

The Ultramax rim is at the universal height, which is taller than standard and adds comfort. This extra height makes it easier for those with achy joints to sit down and get up. It also has an elongated bowl that makes it more comfortable. These two features make the unit ADA compliant. At 99 pounds and 16.56 x 28.31 x 28.75 inches, this toilet is sturdy and durable but not too bulky.

Slam-Free Seat

The TOTO Ultramax comes with the seat included, which is rare. The seat has a “slam-free” design, perfect for any household with kids or light sleepers. The SoftClose hinge system lowers the seat down to the bowl gently even if you push it with too much force. It is also made from solid, high-impact plastic. This seat showcases TOTO’s high quality design, precision, and attention to detail.

Installation

TOTO includes top tightening mounting bolts in the box to make installation easy. Though you will need an extra pair of hands to carry it, installation is straightforward. Be sure to buy a wax free toilet seal for the installation process. There is also a corresponding seat cover that you can buy.

Tornado Flushing System

Using only 1.28 gallons per flush, the TOTO Ultramax is one of the most water efficient toilets in our list. Its tornado flushing system is WaterSense certified. This TOTO reduces water volume while adding power. Here’s how it works. The toilet has two powerful nozzles. Together they create a “double cyclone” that uses centrifugal force to clean the rim and bowl every time you flush. There is extra pressure eliminates the need for extra flushes and avoids clogs.

But despite its power, the Ultramax still flushes as quiet standard toilets. The unit boasts a fully glazed, computer engineered trapway (the S-shaped bottom pipe that takes the waste away). It’s precise shape and fully glazed finish means that less waste will get trapped and clogged. All this means your plungers can stay in the closet.

Glossy Glaze

Speaking of that glaze, TOTO calls it SanaGloss. It is on the entire toilet, inside and out. Sanagloss is “CeFiONtect glaze”. It is a super smooth ionized barrier that prevents debris, bacteria, and mold from sticking to the porous ceramic surfaces. Beyond preventing sticking, the catalyzed ion barrier actually repels particles away.

Preventing bad particles sticking is a form of self-cleaning. One word for that: YES! You’ll still have to wash it, but owning this toilet means a cleaner environment in your bathroom. When you do clean it, you won’t need as much water or chemical agents to make it sterile.

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″]

Pros

  • One-piece construction makes for a sleeker look and easier clean
  • Extremely water efficient at only 1.28 gallons per flush
  • Dual nozzles create a double cyclone flush for maximum power that prevents clogging
  • SanaGlaze prevents debris and bacteria from sticking to bowl and toilet, which means less cleaning and fewer germs
  • SoftClose seat (included!) prevents the annoying toilet slam
  • 1 Year Warranty

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • One-piece toilets can be more difficult if/when repairs are needed
  • Slightly higher price point

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

This is hands down one of our favorite toilets. It’s beautiful, it’s highly efficient, and it helps to keep itself clean. Maybe a bit more of a splurge than the other toilets on our list, but we think it’s worth it.

[/su_note]

4. American Standard Cadet – Most Sanitary Brand

American Standard Cadet Right Height is another great two-piece toilet. It is water efficient, beautiful, and reliable. Made of durable vitreous china it will perform flush after flush. This makes it a great choice for a family home with lots of use. This a classic toilet with a white body, chrome lever, and clean lines. The Cadet fits well in many different bathroom design styles. It also has an elongated seat, which isn’t as compact as round seats but allows for more comfort.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

EverClean Surface

Our favorite feature is the EverClean surface. This American Standard feature inhibits stains, odor causing bacteria, mold, and mildew. This means less cosmetic cleaning and fewer bacteria in the bathroom.

Size and Height

This toilet is a standard, sturdy size. It is 99 pounds with dimensions of 20.5 x 30.25 x 30.75 inches and a standard 12-inch rough-in. The seat height is 16.5 inches high, which is ADA approved, but not as high as others on our top ten list. If you have achy joints or are older, they might be better options.

Flushing System

With only 1.6 gallons per flush, the Cadet is going to save you and the environment. Older toilets can use 3.5, 5, or even up to 7 gallons of water with every flush. If your home is still outfitted with older toilets, buying a water efficient unit will lower your water bills for years to come.

This toilet still maintains performance and avoids clogging with the help of a pressure assisted siphon jet. This gives the toilet power without more water. It does such a good job that it has received the WaterSense certification, which is a partnership with the U.S.’s Environmental Protection Agency.

Installation

The American Standard Cadet 3 is floor mounted and installation is rather straightforward. However, At 99 lbs installing it is a two person job. A coordinating seat and wax free toilet seal needs to be purchased to complete the toilet.

5. Toto Drake – Best Brand Overall

Our favorite two-piece toilet (meaning the bowl and the tank are separate). This TOTO is reasonably priced for a high-quality elongated toilet. It is durable, powerful, and efficient.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

What makes the TOTO Drake a Best Toilet?

Made of strong vitreous china, you won’t have to worry about replacing the TOTO Drake for many years.

It has a wider flush valve, which creates a powerful and effective flush. This gives the TOTO Drake a strong flush while keeping water usage low.

This flush paired with a fully glazed 2.25? trapway (the pipe at the bottom of the bowl) reduces clogging. The trapway also reduces the chance dirty water returns to the bowl.

The TOTO Drake is quiet. Despite being commercial grade, it is no louder than your standard toilet.

Size and Style

At 92 pounds and 28 x 19.5 x 30.5 inches, the Drake can fit in standard bathrooms.

Its clean lines complement many different bathroom styles. We prefer it in cotton white, colonial white, bone, sedona beige, or ebony. Its chrome tip lever is a classic bathroom look. Make sure to pair it with a matching elongated toilet seat.

The Drake meets the ADA approval, because of its high profile height. While not the tallest toilet on our list, it a good middle ground.

Installation on the Drake is straightforward. Though at 90+ pounds you may need some help moving it into place. And don’t forget to purchase a wax ring and bolts, as they are not included.

6. KOHLER Wellworth – Best on a Budget

The Kohler Wellworth has clean lines that fits modern and traditional styles. It’s best features are its reasonable price and size. At 45 pounds and 29.2 x 28.5 x 18 inches, this is a compact unit, making it a better pick for small bathrooms. Furthermore, its round bowl makes it an ideal solution for narrow powder rooms. It is part of the Memoirs bathroom line making it easy to match other fixtures, including this pedestal bathroom sink.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

[su_box title=”About Kohler” style=”default” box_color=”#f0e6ff” title_color=”#000000″ radius=”3″]

Founded in 1873 Kohler’s mission is “to improve your sense of gracious living.” The company focuses on innovations and design in technology. It offers quality products across many price points.

[/su_box]

Flush System

Using at most 1.6 gallons per flush, the Wellworth meets standards. On average you’ll use less because it’s dual-flush. Many dual flush buttons are on top of the tank so you can’t store candles, tissues or towels on them. Instead, the Kohler Wellworth has a lever with two flushes on the left side. One option a light flush (for liquid waste) at 1.1 gallons and the other option is a full flush (for solid waste) at 1.6 gallons. Being able to choose a smaller flush allows you to save more water and money.

Research has shown that dual flush toilets can save up to $99 in water per year. Due to this conservation, the Wellworth is WaterSense certified. This label means that it uses 20% less water than a standard toilet while meeting flushing performance.

Build Quality

Made with vitreous china the Wellworth is durable and effective. Its siphon action jets and fully glazed trapway make clogging unlikely.

Installation and Style

Being under 50 lbs with a smaller footprint makes installation manageable. Make sure to buy a coordinating round bowl seat, wax rings, and blots if you are planning on doing it yourself. They don’t come in the box. You have the option to choose from four great color options: white, biscuit, almond, and black.

Finally, as with many of our toilets, the Wellworth provides a one year limited warranty with purchase.

[/su_note]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″]

Pros

  • Lightweight and compact for easy installation and smaller bathrooms
  • Dual flush technology to save even more water
  • High flush power and fully glazed trapway to help eliminate clogging

Cons

  • May seem too small for larger bathrooms

[/su_column][/su_row]

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

Reasonably priced, more compact, and extremely water efficient, the Wellworth is a great choice for smaller bathrooms or powder rooms. We love the option to choose each flush depending on the need.

[/su_note]

7. American Standard Compact – Most Sanitary Brand

The American Standard Cadet is one of the best designed toilet lines we have found. That’s why we have reviewed two others in this best toilets article. This member of the line is a compact one-piece. As mentioned before, the one-piece offers a sleeker look and removes the hard to clean areas caused by two pieces butting up against each other. And that means easier cleaning for you and fewer areas for bacteria to hide. Double plus.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Compact Cadet 3, like the rest of the toilets in American Standard’s Cadet series, is ADA compliant at their “Right Height”. A little bit taller than standard toilets, this height makes it easier to sit down, especially for those with special needs. It has a sturdy porcelain frame.

Dimensions

Smaller than most toilets, the Compact Cadet 3’s dimensions are 28.5 x 15.5 x 28.5 inches. It can fit into tight bathroom spaces. The seat, although elongated for more comfort, is compact. It takes up the same space as a round front toilet. So you get the double benefit of being comfortable but in a smaller footprint.

Style

The Compact Cadet 3 is to the rest of the line, except it has a one-piece design. Unlike other one-piece toilets, we wouldn’t recommend this model for modernist bathrooms. It is available in four color options: white, linen, bone, and black.

Slow Close Seat

Unlike many other toilets, the Cadet FloWise includes a slow-close toilet seat with cover. The seat’s hinges slowly lower the lid to the bowl without creating a crashing sound. The included seat has a sanitary lift tab, so you don’t need to worry about what you might be touching. We can all agree that little details like this go a long way!

Everclean Surface

The Compact Cadet 3 has an“EverClean” surface inside and out. This glazing technology inhibits stains, odor causing bacteria, mildew, and mold on toilet surfaces. This means fewer germs in the bathroom and less time cleaning your toilet. From an aesthetics standpoint, the EverClean surface keeps your toilet looking shiny and new for many years.

Efficiency

The Compact Cadet 3 is a high efficiency, low consumption toilet. It uses 1.28 gallons per flush (lower than many toilets on our best list). It is WaterSense certified. The toilet uses 20 percent less water than the normal low-consumption toilets that use 1.6 gallons per flush. This saves a significant amount of water and money.

Flush Power

Just because this toilet is water efficient doesn’t mean it has poor performance. The Compact Cadet 3 uses a smart gravity design to deliver a stronger, more reliable flush. That will result in fewer clogs. In fact, independent MaP (Maximum Performance) tests awarded the Cadet 3 Flushing System its highest rating. This test measures a toilet’s ability to handle 1,000 grams of solid waste in a single flush.

The Cadet series has a three-inch chemical-resistant flush valve that allows more water to enter the bowl. It is 80 percent faster than a toilet with a standard two-inch flush valve. This results in a faster and cleaner flush. American Standard created the flapper to prevent warping and distortion.

Finally, the Compact Cadet has a 2.25 inch fully glazed siphon trapway. Larger than the industry standard, the increased size and fully glazed surface allow waste to pass through more easily. The trapway was engineered so there no choke points in the piping. To test this they make sure a two-inch ball can pass at all points. The net effect is that the Compact Cadet’s trapway can move 60 percent more waste than a two-inch model.

Installation and Maintenance

The Compact Cadet 3 weighs 103 pounds. Installation is straightforward, although you will need help to carry it. Also, be sure to purchase a wax free toilet seal and toilet bolt set before installing. Don’t worry about purchasing bolt caps, because two color-matched bolt caps are included. One-piece toilets are harder to find parts for but there are numerous resources online if you ever need to fix your toilet.

  • One-piece units can be harder to repair

[/su_note]

[/su_note]

8. Niagara Stealth – Great for Conserving Water

The Niagara is a reasonably-priced unit with the lowest water consumption on our list. A two-piece option, the Niagara Stealth comes in separate pieces: bowl and tank. While some prefer a one-piece, two-pieces are more popular. So, it will be easier to find parts for if it needs repairs. This particular two-piece is a floor mounted unit made of durable vitreous china. It weighs in at 103 pounds and its dimensions are 18.75 x 28.88 x 31 inches. The Niagara is a sturdy toilet that will fit average sized bathrooms.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

Water Efficiency

Next, we’ll get into the bells and whistles that come with the Niagara Stealth. As we mentioned above, it has the lowest water consumption of any of the units listed. This an ultra-high-efficient, because it only uses 0.8 gallons per flush. Switching to the Stealth will result in tremendous water savings per year. With its reasonable price point, it will make financial sense to replace older toilets that often use 3+ gallons per flush. That means every flush will save 2.2 gallons of water. In one day a family of four would conserve at least around 35 gallons of water. That is huge savings for both your pocketbook and the environment. It is a WaterSense certified toilet.

Flush System

Maybe you’re thinking, “Okay, so it uses barely any water…how is it actually going to flush away my waste?” We were skeptical and not about to sign up for clogged toilet headaches. But, the Stealth boasts pressure assisted flushing technology to push everything out.

A flush from the Stealth is as effective as the flushes in older, water hogging toilets. The tank is big, but the bowl is small so it refills fast. If multiple people need to use the bathroom in succession the Stealth will be ready. As the name suggests, the Stealth flushes very quietly. This toilet is no louder than any other on the list or likely any you currently have in your home.

Style and Comfort

The Stealth has a clean, classic look. It is ADA compliant, meaning that it is taller and the bowl is set higher than older toilets. This provides more comfort and is easier on achy joints to sit down onto. The elongated bowl also increases comfort and helps meet ADA rules. The flush button is on the top of the tank, making for a cleaner look.

Installation

Installing this toilet is very simple. At over 100 lbs, you will need an extra set of hands to get it into your bathroom. Buy wax free toilet seals and a matching seat before installation as they are not included.

9. Saniflo 023 Sanicompact – Great for a Small Space

The SANICOMPACT is one of the premium choices in our best toilet article. Saniflo designed with very specific needs in mind. It’s best for bathrooms with limited space. And it’s a great option for those who are environmentally conscious or have physical limitations. Overall, it’s a small toilet that’s accessible.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

Compact Design

As its name suggests, the Sanicompact is very compact. It was designed for half bathrooms or tiny bathrooms that won’t fit a conventional toilet. In fact, because the Sanicompact is self-contained, it doesn’t even have a tank. (More on the engineering and technology behind that later).

With tiny dimensions of 14.5 x 18.25 x 15.75 inches. It can be installed in many (non-conventional) locations such as a loft or under the stairway. Or even in a bedroom or garage conversion. The minimalist, modern design and tiny footprint create a solution to many cramped space problems.

Efficiency

The Sanicompact has a dual push button. This allows you to choose between the standard flush consumption of 1.28 gallons per flush or 1 gallon per flush for small messes.

Flushing System

How does it do this without a gravity flow tank to push everything through?

Instead of a tank, the flushing action and macerating pump cycle are engaged after pressing the flush button. Then an electric timer and solenoid valve activate to fill and wash the sides of the bowl. After that, a motor runs for 10-15 seconds to suck waste and paper into the macerator. Everything from there is then pumped away. Once the motor has stopped, the timer then programs the refill of the bowl with fresh water. A non-return valve, which comes already assembled, prevents backflow into the bowl. The waste can be pumped upward to 9 feet and/or 120 feet horizontally to connect with the sewage line. This a clever design for spaces where a conventional toilet won’t work due to sewage line distance.

Additionally, this floor mounted toilet can pump away a sink’s wastewater with you connect them together. These well-engineered unconventional features make the Sanicompcat the best toilet for unusual spaces.

Installation

The tiny size and lower weight (62.2 pounds) also make for very easy installation. Its complicated features come pre-assembled, so you only have to worry about bolting it in and connecting it to the sewer system.

Built fit in tiny spaces, this vitreous china toilet is a great solution for small bathroom headaches.

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″]

Pros

  • Fits in super tight spaces and/or where plumbing hasn’t been set up to support a bathroom
  • Self-contained unit that doesn’t require an upper tank
  • Very low water consumption
  • Can be connected to a sink to pump away the sink’s wastewater
  • 2 Year Warranty

[/su_column][su_column size=”1/2″]

Cons

  • Unless you really need this toilet for a small space, it’s not a necessity
  • The macerator/pump should be connected to a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) circuit
  • If not flushed semi-regularly (a couple of times a week), an odor can develop

[/su_column][/su_row]

[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

The Bottom Line

If you have found yourself in a problem solving nightmare, needing a toilet in a cramped space or to build a bathroom far away from a sewage line, the Sanicompact could very well solve it for you! Self-contained and tiny, this water efficient toilet can create a half bathroom almost anywhere.

Best Toilet Reviews Buyer’s Guide

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

Everyone wants a good toilet. But what makes a great toilet in 2020?

The best toilet fits your style, space and comfort needs. AND it must flush your bathroom business every time. Pay attention its flushing system. If you care about the environment, buy a dual flusher. Good luck and happy flushing!

Rough-In Measurements

The first step in this toilet purchasing journey is to measure your bathroom space. Find your “rough-in.” This is the distance between the wall behind the toilet and the drainpipe’s center or the toilet mounting bolts. We’ve found that it is easiest to get this measurement before taking out your old toilet. That way you can use it while you are waiting for your new one to arrive.

If measuring the rough-in based on the bolts that hold the toilet down, measure from the wall behind the toilet to the center of the closest bolt. If there are four bolts present, measure to the center of the rear bolts (closest to the wall). Make sure that your new toilet’s rough-in is smaller than your old toilet’s rough-in. The standard rough-in is 12 inches, but there may be 10-inch or 14-inch rough-ins in some older homes. Rough-in measurements will be available in the product information of your prospective toilet. In our comparison chart we have included each toilet’s rough-in measurement.

Bathroom

Toilet Style

There are one-piece or two-piece toilets. Two-piece toilets are the most common. Their bowl and tank are separate pieces bolted together. Two-piece toilets tend to be less expensive than one-pieces and it’s easier to find repair parts for them. Both styles get the job done, but some think one-piece toilets are the best option.

  • They have a sleeker design because there is no seam between the bowl and tank.
  • They have fewer areas to trap bacteria and so are easier to clean.

A third option is the wall-mounted or wall-hung toilet. Their aesthetic has made them increasingly popular in modern designer homes. If you like this style, you’ll need to consider the specifications required for wall-mounted toilets. These include plumbing, waste modifications and additional wall bracing.

Color and Finish

The color and finish of your toilet impact appearance and durability. The most common colors for toilets are white and off-white. White and off-white are usually the preferred choice, since they match well with a range of bathroom tile colors and decorations. However, some brands offer colors such as tan, yellow, and black.

Although aesthetics are important – you should also be concerned with the toilet materials. The right kind of finish helps your toilet stay clean and durable. The most common choice for toilets is porcelain. It’s a popular choice due to its durability and rigidity. Brands often name their finishes (for example, American Standard has ‘EverClean’). These finishes can help your toilet stay fresh and stain-free for longer.

Trapways Style

A toilet trapway is the curving channel in the base of the toilet that leads from the hole to the drain. When buying a toilet, you’ll have the choice between a visible or concealed trapway.

Visible trapways are usually a pain to clean since they’re usually in a tight space at the base of the toilet. For an easier time cleaning, choose a concealed or ‘skirted’ trapway. These cover the trapway in a smooth surface that makes it easier to reach and keep clean.

Toilet Bowls

Bowl Shape

Toilet bowls are either round or elongated (oval) in shape. Round bowls tend to be less expensive and are great for saving space. If you want more space to sit, Elongated bowls can give you a few more precious inches. This can make them more comfortable. Many toilets on our list have elongated bowls, but there are a few space saving round options as well. Reference the comparison chart at the beginning of this article for details.

Bowl Height

There are two heights most toilets fall into: standard height and universal height. Some manufacturers call Universal height “comfort height” or “right height”. For standard sized toilets, the rim is 14 to 15 inches off the ground. Universal height toilets are taller with a rim between 15 to 17 inches off the ground. Taller toilets are easier for the adult population to use and are softer on achy joints. The taller toilets are also ADA-approved.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets accessibility rules for homes and commercial buildings. If injured or older people will be using your toilet, ensuring it’s ADA compliant will make their life easier. ADA compliant toilet seats have a height of 17-19 inches.

One reason that older folks end up leaving their homes is that they have difficulty standing up from their toilet. Buying a taller toilet future proofs your home so you can stay there well into your retirement.

Bowl Size

Elongated bowls are typically more comfortable and are easier to use and clean. Round bowls take up less space but aren’t as modern and have a less forceful flush. Whichever you prefer, make sure your toilet seat matches your bowl type.

Bidets

You might be interested to know that some bowls come with built in bidets. Bidets can help you feel totally clean and refreshed after a visit to the bathroom. Check out our article on the best bidet toilets for a guide on choosing a bowl with this modern feature.

Warranty

Warranties are important for toilets, especially since defects and damages can render the toilet unusable. Typical warranties for toilets range anywhere from limited one year warranties up to five years. If you expect your toilet to be used regularly or be exposed to the elements (like an outhouse), consider prioritizing the warranty.

Toilet Seats

Surprisingly, toilets don’t usually include the seat in the box. The toilet seat should match your toilet and your bathroom. Double check that both your bowl and seat are either round or elongated. Seats come in a wide variety of materials including real wood, cushioned vinyl, and plastic. For our chosen best toilets that do not come with a seat, we have linked to the toilet’s corresponding seat (same shape, brand, and color options).

There are specialty seat options if you want to feel fancy. We like slow-close or slam-free toilet seats because they are quieter and more durable. Super fancy toilet seats have amenities like surface heaters, built in bidets, air dryer and air deodorizers.

Tanks and Flushing Systems

Tanks

Almost all toilets have the same tank size, so focus on other features instead when choosing your best toilet. What’s more important is the flush valve, which does vary. The flush valve is in the bottom center of the tank and releases water held in the tank when you flush your toilet. This controls how fast your toilet releases water when flushing. Larger valves push water into your bowl quicker, resulting in a powerful flush. Water efficient toilets have larger valves to compensate for using less liquid.

A subtle aesthetic choice can be where the flush lever is located. Classically, they are on the upper left side if you are facing the toilet.

Another option are tankless toilet systems. Tankless toilets receive water directly from a supply line with enough pressure to clear the bowl. No tank required. Tankless toilets take up less space and use less water than a traditional toilet. However, they usually cost more and are more expensive to install.

Flushing Systems

The two most common flushing systems are pressure-assisted and gravity-flush systems. Pressure-assisted systems use air to push water into the bowl during flushing. They reduce the likelihood of clogging but tend to be noisier and more expensive. Their complexity can make them costly to repair.

The gravity-flush system is more common and simpler. The toilet uses water and its tank’s height to create flushing pressure. This force pushes water from tank to bowl, and through an S-shaped trapway. This is the tubing on the sides of your toilet through which water flows into your pipes. Gravity flushers are popular because they are quiet and need less maintenance. An amateur can replace the entire system in 30 minutes spending less than $20.

A larger trapway diameter is better for those who need an assertive toilet. It will reduce clogging and overflowing. Fully glazed trapways also prevent clogging. Several choices on our best toilets list have this feature.

Some newer toilets, including a couple on our top ten list, have dual flush options. This gives the user a full or partial flush option, depending on the need for that particular flush. This allows the user to conserve water without sacrificing performance. Finally, there are self-contained toilets that do not require a tank of water to flush. These are useful when water isn’t accessible or for half-bathrooms in strange places. We include a self-contained toilet in our reviews section: the Saniflo SANICOMPACT. It has a macerator built into its base

Finally, you might consider a touchless flush system. They are common in commercial spaces, but there are home options as well. These usually work by installing a motion sensor near the toilet. When the sensor detects movement (like you leaving the toilet or waving your hand), the sensor will flush for you. It’s a convenient and hygienic option for any modern home.

Water Usage

By federal law, new toilets cannot use more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush (GPF). Many high-efficiency toilets use less than that. However, if have a home built before the 1992 Energy Policy Act there’s a good chance that your current toilet is a water waster. Older toilets use, on average, 3.5 GPF and up to a crazy 7 GPF. For this reason, buying a high efficiency toilet (HET) will lower your water bill and help the environment.

Water Efficient Toilets

HET toilets are also known as Water Efficient Toilets. This toilet is designed to use less water for each flush. You can usually tell if a toilet is HET if it has dual flush, is WaterSense certified, or is labeled a HET or uHET (ultra-high efficiency toilet).

There are two main types of flushing systems: single and dual flush. Like we mentioned above, single flush toilets comply with the law of not using more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Dual flush gives you the option to use more or less water, depending on if you went #1 or #2. Dual flush toilets can either use 1.6 gallons per flush, or 0.8 gallons per flush. If your toilet has pressure-assist technology, it likely uses around 1 gallon per flush.

Check out the water consumption column in our best toilet comparison chart to see our top ten choices water efficiency. Many of our picks have been WaterSense certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This means they meet established flushing guidelines and use at least 20% less water than standard 1.6-gallon toilets.

The EPA estimates that WaterSense model toilets can save the average family around 13,000 gallons of water a year.

The WaterSense label makes it easy to find water-saving toilets without sacrificing performance. There are WaterSense approved toilets at every price range and style preference. You’re guaranteed to find an approved toilet that meets your needs. Check with your utility company, because many offer rebates and vouchers for a WaterSense certified toilet.

Got Toilet Problems?

Is it time for a new toilet? If you’re dealing with any of these common problems regularly, it might be time to replace your old toilet.

  • Water Trickling into the Tank
  • Frequent Clogging
  • Leaks from Old Seals
  • Loose Handles
  • Leaky Toilet Base
  • Toilet Running Long After Flush

FAQ

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

What are the best toilet brands?

Choosing a toilet from American Standard, Kohler, or Toto would always be a safe bet in our minds.

They each have high-quality manufacturing, sell a range of bathroom appliances, and they have dependable warranties on their products.

What’s the difference between a normal toilet and a macerating toilet?

Macerating toilets work by pumping your refuse to a special unit that liquefies the waste before sending it out to a main drain line. In contrast, normal toilets use gravity and tank water pressure to pull the waste down.

Macerating toilets are best used in cabins, off-the-grid homes, or any property that is far from a main drain line. They’re more expensive than normal toilets, but given these special situations, are more cost effective than building a new plumbing system.

Macerating toilet pumps can get overwhelmed easily, so they aren’t recommended for high-traffic family homes.

Are dual flush toilets worth it?

There are pros and cons to consider with dual flush toilets. The pros include saving water – which saves money on your water bill and puts less pressure on the environment. The downside is that you might need to clean your dual-flush toilets more often since they use less water.

How Do Toilet Bidets Work?

Bidets help you get an extra fresh feeling after using the bathroom. They work by gently spraying water on your behind to help get you clean. Bidets can also save you money on toilet paper (you’ll need less with a bidet).

If you’re interested in this feature, you can look for toilet bowls that have bidets built in. If you’ve already chosen a toilet bowl, there are also bidet-equipped toilet seats. There are many options that are family friendly, ADA compliant, and customizable. Bidets are a great way to modernize your bathroom and upgrade your toilet experience.

What’s The Best Way to Keep My Toilet Bowl Clean if I Have Hard Water?

If you notice a lot of scale or mineral buildup on appliances in your home, this will likely begin to appear on your new toilet bowl as well. The best long-term solution for this is to purchase a whole-house water filter that includes a water softener.

In the short-term, we’d recommend mixing white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Let this mixture sit in the toilet, and after some time has passed, use a gentle toilet brush to scrub the bowl clean. Always avoid abrasive cleaners or methods, since this can damage the germ-resistant finish on your toilet.

[/su_note]

Conclusion

[su_note note_color=”#ffffff” text_color=”#000″]

Choosing the perfect toilet for your home boils down to the space you have, special requirements you need fulfilled, and any additional features you might like to add to your bathroom experience.

Firstly, always take measurements before beginning your search. Once you know the space you’re working with, you can begin to look at toilet styles and finishes. Choose between a round and elongated seat and bowl, and look for features like ADA compliance or bidets to meet any special requirements or preferences.

Flushing styles can impact the quality of your bathroom experience as well. Choose gravity-flush systems for quieter flushing and easy maintenance. And finally, look for high efficiency toilets (HETs) and the EPA WaterSense certification to save water and money on your utility bill.

Bathrooms are the one place in your home that everyone is guaranteed to visit. We hope this guide made it easier to choose a toilet that will meet your home’s needs.
